Decisions
Every important choice for the probe is written in a decision record: the context, what was decided, and its consequences, good and bad. Here are the essentials.
| No. | Decision | Why | What it costs |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0001 | CMSIS-DAP over TCP, with a processor written for the project | use Wi-Fi instead of USB; no licensing question; testable on the PC | every exchange pays a network round trip; going back to USB means reflashing debugprobe |
| 0002 | Pico W firmware: SWD by PIO, lwIP with no system, mDNS name | connect the processor to the two SWD wires and to Wi-Fi; reach the probe without knowing its address | the Wi-Fi driver is only usable with Raspberry Pi chips; no more USB |
| 0003 | Local log on port 4442 | not paying a round trip per read; long watches without a PC | no readings during an OpenOCD session; the probe’s memory is bounded |
| 0004 | Update over the network | no more unplugging the Pico W or touching the wiring | no authentication; in v0.5, a valid but faulty image made the probe unreachable |
| 0005 | Boot loader and fallback, replaces 0004’s copy | an image cannot decide on its own replacement | a few more seconds per update; the boot loader only changes through BOOTSEL; validation only proves the connection |
